What is Rebuilding Together?
Rebuilding Together is the nation’s largest volunteer program
providing assistance to homeowners who, because of physical or financial
limitations, are unable to make needed home repairs on their own.
Incorporated in 1988, the national organization is headquartered in
Washington, DC and promotes the replication and coordination of affiliates
in more than 865 cities in all 50 states. For more information regarding

Accomplishments in 2008 included, 10,000 houses and nonprofit facilities rehabilitated, 200,000 skilled and unskilled volunteers donated their time and skills in communities acrosas america, and more that 200 affiliates nationwide delivered approximately $100 million in market value.
What does Rebuilding Together do in Essex County, NJ?
Each year during the last weekend in April, volunteers come together to make repairs for elderly and disabled homeowners, and those with young children. Rebuilding Together, Essex County, NJ has made repairs on almost 100 homes and two community centers, since its inception in 1997.
What type of repairs are done?
Volunteers do a wide variety of free repairs, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, plastering, painting, landscaping, weatherization and disability modification.
How are assistance recipients selected?
Rebuilding Together, Essex County, NJ works with local community and government organizations to identify low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled, or have small children living at home and in need of assistance. Neighborhoods from which four or more applications are submitted are considered for selection. Applications meeting basic requirements, including home ownership and income level are carefully reviewed. The Board makes final house selections.
When do repairs take place?
Most of Rebuilding Together, Essex County, NJ repair projects occur during
the last weekend in April each year.
Is there a charge for these repairs?
No. All repairs are provided free of charge. However, homeowners, along
with family members and friends, are expected to assist with the work.
Is Rebuilding Together, Essex County, NJ affiliated with a
particular church or religion?
No. The program invites everyone, regardless of religious affiliation,
to participate.
